What Is It?
Triptorelin is a decapeptide synthetic analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). It is used as a GnRH agonist in the form of an acetate or pamoate salt. Triptorelin decreases pituitary secretion of gonadotropins luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), subsequently decreasing testosterone levels. Like other GnRH agonists, triptorelin may be used in the treatment of hormone-responsive cancers such as prostate cancer or breast cancer, precocious puberty, estrogen-dependent conditions such as andometriosis or uterine fibroids, and in assisted reproduction. It is also used as therapy for gender identity disorder.
Benefits
Circulating levels of testosterone in men and estrogen in women regulate the synthesis of GnRH is typically produced in a pulsatile manner. Triptorelin infusions produce a transient increase in sex hormones, but with continued non-pulsatile stimulation, LH and FSH synthesis are inhibited causing a decline in estrogen and testosterone levels. Triptorelin’s benefits and side effects are due to this phenomenon. Below are its uses:
Palliation of prostate cancer
Chemical castration
Improving endometriosis
Breast cancer management
Improving precocious puberty in male rats
How Is It Prescribed Medically?
Triptorelin injection (Trelstar) is used to treat the symptoms associated with advanced prostate cancer. Triptorelin injection (Triptodur) is used to treat central precocious puberty (CPP; a condition causing children to enter puberty too soon, resulting in faster than normal bone growth and development of sexual characteristics) in children 2 years and older. Triptorelin injection is in a class of medications called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. It works by decreasing the amount of certain hormones in the body.
